Security Heightens at Hanukkah Events Across US
Officials reported that the Sunday attack, carried out by two gunmen, was “designed to target Sydney's Jewish community on the first day of Hanukkah,” the Jewish Festival of Lights. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns described the incident as a "terrorism event" during a press briefing, as cited by a news agency.
In reaction, police forces in New York City, Suffolk County, Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, and Washington, DC deployed extra officers to synagogues, schools, and Hanukkah gatherings, despite confirming the absence of any credible threats locally.
“This was a deliberate act of violence against Jews celebrating their faith,” New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told the outlet. “This is not an isolated incident. It is part of a wider assault on Jewish life.”
New York City is home to the largest Jewish population of any city outside Israel. Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams emphasized the nature of the attack, stating, “This was just not a random act of violence. It was antisemitic and targeted Jewish people.”
The New York Police Department reported that it has increased the presence of uniformed officers, deployed heavy weapons units, and implemented specialized patrols to ensure the safety of the Jewish community during Hanukkah events.
