Gulf States Face Rising Costs Defending Against Iranian Attacks
The current surge in attacks follows US-Israeli strikes on Iran, which prompted Tehran to target Gulf states hosting US-linked assets, including bases in Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, Kuwait, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.
According to compiled estimates, the total cost of air defense operations in the region over the past two days has already surpassed $3 billion, with higher-end projections exceeding $5 billion.
The UAE’s Defense Ministry reported that since Saturday, 174 ballistic missiles aimed at the country have been detected, 161 of which were successfully intercepted. Additionally, 689 Iranian drones were tracked, with 645 destroyed by UAE defenses.
This widening cost asymmetry highlights the long-term sustainability risks for Gulf states, as intercepting attacks continues to demand massive resources compared with the relatively low expense of launching drones and missiles.
