UN Chief, Arab League Head Discuss Regional De-Escalation in Cairo
Discussions focused on efforts to advance peace through diplomatic engagement and expand cooperation between the UN and the Arab League to support stability and sustainable development across the Arab region, according to reports from the UN office in Cairo.
During his visit, Guterres also met with the UN country team in Egypt and regional directors to review the organization's work with the Egyptian government and its assistance to people affected by humanitarian emergencies in Gaza and Sudan.
Egypt has received Palestinians who left the Gaza Strip following Israel’s war on the territory in October 2023, including patients and wounded individuals requiring medical care. The country has also provided refuge to Sudanese fleeing the conflict that began in April 2023.
Egyptian government figures cited in a 2025 UNICEF report indicated that more than 1.2 million Sudanese had entered the country since the war started, in addition to approximately five million Sudanese who were already residing there before the conflict. No official figures are available for the number of Palestinians who have crossed into Egypt.
Guterres arrived in Cairo on Saturday for diplomatic consultations focused on reducing tensions between the United States and Iran and supporting a negotiated resolution to the conflict, working alongside Egypt and other regional and international partners.
