Guterres Meets Arab League Chief in Cairo as US-Iran Tensions Rise

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres held talks in Cairo on Sunday with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy, focusing on regional developments, peace through dialogue and closer cooperation between the two bodies.

The UN office in Cairo said on the US social media platform X that the discussions centered on advancing dialogue-based peace and strengthening ties between the UN and the Arab League to support stability and sustainable development across the Arab region.

Guterres also met the UN country team in Egypt and regional directors, the office said, to review the UN’s work with the Egyptian government and its support for people affected by humanitarian crises in Gaza and Sudan.

Egypt hosts many Palestinians who left the Gaza Strip after Israel’s genocidal war in October 2023, among them patients and wounded people needing medical care. It also shelters Sudanese refugees who fled the war that broke out in their country in April 2023.

According to Egyptian government estimates cited in a 2025 UNICEF report, more than 1.2 million Sudanese have arrived in Egypt since the conflict began, on top of roughly 5 million Sudanese already living in the country beforehand. No official figures exist for the number of Palestinians who have entered Egypt.

Guterres arrived in Cairo on Saturday as part of diplomatic consultations aimed at easing tensions between the US and Iran and backing a diplomatic solution to the conflict, working with Egypt and regional and international partners.

In a post on X, Guterres said he was carrying a message calling for an end to the expansion of the war, the protection of civilians and conditions for diplomacy and peace. “We must tackle the inequalities that divide societies - & stop the conflicts that are multiplying human suffering & pushing an already unequal world further apart,” he said.

Last month, Guterres and Fahmy met on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York to discuss how regional escalation affects the security and stability of the Arab region, as well as its implications for international shipping, energy security and global trade.
